Safety Precautions from the University RCMP

The UNA has received notifications from community members about break-ins in their buildings. The University RCMP reports that there are have been two residential break-ins, 15 business break-ins, and 11 thefts from automobiles in 2022 – and that these figures do not appear to be a significant increase nor decrease compared to previous years.

The RCMP are recommending that residents practice the following safety precautions:

• Do not “buzz” unknown people into the building.
• Do not allow unknown people to enter the building when you enter or exit and ensure the door is fully closed and locked.
• Wait for the security gate to fully close before entering or leaving the parkade.
• Ensure doors to storage rooms are fully closed and locked.
• In storage lockers, consider putting items in boxes so they are not in plain view and lock all bikes and scooters.
• Lock the door to your storage unit.
• Do not leave valuables in your vehicle or items in plain view.
• Ensure your vehicle is always locked even if it’s in a secure parkade.
• Report dim or burned out lighting to your building manager.
• Know your neighbours.
• Be alert and report suspicious people or activities to the police.
