Join Committees on Community Engagement, Land Use, and Community Newspaper

If you have knowledge, experience, or a keen interest in land use planning/development, community engagement, journalism, or newspaper editorial boards, this is your opportunity to contribute to community building.

Are you passionate about making a meaningful impact in your community? The UNA is seeking enthusiastic residents to join the volunteer committees below.


UNA Community Engagement Advisory Committee 

The UNA Community Engagement Advisory Committee (CEAC) provides advice to the UNA Board of Directors on matters related to improving the engagement of residents at the community level. The Committee also assists the Board in identifying and implementing initiatives that will improve the levels and effectiveness of resident participation in community life, with a view towards improving the overall quality of life in the university neighbourhoods.

Committee members will serve with an appointed chair from the UNA Board of Directors and other returning members, and will have support from UNA staff. There are seven (7) seats to fill in this committee and the term of appointment is two years. This is a volunteer Committee that serves without compensation.

You are encouraged to apply if you are a resident of the university neighbourhoods and a UNA Society Member with interests specific to community development, engagement and consultation, including:

  • Recruiting and organizing UNA residents with appropriate experience who are interested in participating in UNA community advisory committees and working groups;
  • Designing and delivering inclusive community consultation programs;
  • Promoting sustainable decisions by recognizing the needs and interests of all community members, including decision makers;
  • Finding ways to improving UNA residents’ level of engagement and involvement in community life;
  • Working with boards and administrations in improving their effectiveness in dealing with community engagement and consultation processes.

UNA Land Use Advisory Committee 

The Land Use Advisory Committee (LUAC) serves as an advisory committee to the UNA Board of Directors regarding land use planning and development on the UBC Campus, as well as a facilitator of discussions with residents on land use planning and development.

Committee members will serve with an appointed chair from the UNA Board of Directors and other returning members, and will have support from UNA staff. There is one (1) seat to fill in this committee and the term of appointment is two years. This is a volunteer Committee that serves without compensation.

You are encouraged to apply if you are a resident of the university neighbourhoods and a UNA Society Member motivated to help build community and have specific knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

  • Accessibility
  • Active Transportation
  • Agriculture
  • Architectural Design
  • Children and Youth
  • Community Planning
  • Construction and Land Development
  • Education
  • Environmental Matters
  • Landscape Design
  • Recreation
  • Sustainability
  • Urban Planning

Newspaper Editorial Committee 

The Newspaper Editorial Committee (NEC) oversees the content of community newspaper, The Campus Resident. In coordination with UNA staff, and guided by the UNA Community Newspaper Policy, the NEC will be responsible for setting the editorial direction of the newspaper, determining its content structure, and ensuring that the newspaper contains information important and relevant to the UNA community.

Committee members will serve with an appointed chair from the UNA Board of Directors and other returning members, and will have support from UNA staff. There are three (3) seats to fill in this committee and the term of appointment is two years. This is a volunteer Committee that serves without compensation.

You are encouraged to apply if you are a resident of the university neighbourhoods and a UNA Society Member with interests specific to community development, engagement and consultation, including:

  • Journalism
  • Publishing
  • Editing
  • News Reporting/Writing
  • Photojournalism
  • Current Events/Affairs
  • Community Development
